The Last Flowers of Fall at Laughing Rock Farm

Trifolium pratense
Just a few red clover blossoms left. We put them right on the very top of our salad cuz they make us grin.

The flowers named for stars (a-star) bloom right into the winter in beautiful shades of violet, lavender, and white. Their petals make a beautiful garnish for our salads and add a hint of digestive bitter.

Chicorium intybus
Nothing seems to stop the chicory; neither frost nor lawn mowers nor goats. She is an aster, too, so she has a place of honor on top of our salad these days.

What a yummy surprise to find this purple violet enjoying the late afternoon sunlight slanting down through the crimson leaves of the maples. We’ve had so little rain that I haven’t picked violet leaves for salad, figuring they wouldn’t appreciate the added stress.
