Week of August 16, 2016 - Harvest Season, Teasels, Mushrooms and more ...

Green greetings of harvest season to you all.

August is bringing thunder storms and torrential rains every afternoon, and the Catskills are vibrating with growth and pulsing with green. This is the weather pattern that I learned in my early years here: hot and humid mornings followed, late in the afternoon, with lightening, thunder, and deluges of rain, quickly over, though sometimes lasting for hours. And I am glad to have it back after many years of too much or too little rainfall.

The alternation of hot and wet is working magic in the garden and on our local farms. The late frost this spring means little fruit from early-blooming trees, but the raspberries and blackberries are abundant. The farm sands are cornucopias: eggplant, sweet corn, zuchinni, cucumbers, kale, chard, broccoli, cauliflower, melons, collards, mustard greens, beets, carrots, and herbs, herbs, herbs. And, of course,  tomatoes! tomatoes in every color from bright yellow to nearly black, streaked or blushing, and redder than red.

Soon the forest will be home to a carpet of mushrooms. Already, here and there, boletes are popping up. I promised the Green Goddesses they would have chanterelles to eat this week, and I intend to make good on my promise. Wild mushrooms are my first love, and I am anticipating a splendid mushroom-filled fall thanks to all the rain.

The teasel is blooming. The teasel is blooming. I am taking teasel tincture daily, so I am spending some time with her, getting to know her better. Isn’t she beautiful?

The teasel in my meadow is white, but teasel flowers are often pale purple. I am seeing lots of purple and blue flowers in bloom right now. Want to visit them? Come on; they are all right here.

Green blessings are everywhere.

p.s. That’s my granddaughter, Monica Jean, enjoying the rain, rather calmly. The very next day, she and a friend jumped in a huge mud puddle in the midst of another rainstorm. Wheee!
