Week of April 13, 2016 - Goat Barn Update

Dear Friends, students, and well-wishers

Nine months ago the barn at Laughing Rock Farm burned to the ground, taking with it all my goats and rabbits. Goats have been a daily part of my life for 42 years, and it was soon obvious that I wanted to continue my relationship with them: for myself, for my health, for my family and their health, and for the apprentices and their health and learning. (Apprentices gain self-respect as they learn to milk, herd the goats, and make yogurt and cheese.)

In memory of the goats who died, from money I had on hand, we erected an 18-foot tall goat tower last fall. It needs only a copper cone roof and a goat weather vane to be complete.

With visions of new goats, and with the help of your donations, we are building a new barn. We wanted to build the barn only after we were feeling more excited about the possibility of new goats than sad about our dead goats. That happened in late December. It has been an open winter with few snowfalls, so work has moved along steadily since then. You can see what is happening here.

Our appreciation for your loving support is uppermost in our minds. Every cut of a beam is done in gratitude. Every turn of a screw is done with thankfulness. Every hammer on a nail is done with respect for your donations. We are sustained and nourished by your willingness to envision this rebuilding with us. Thank you!

The barn will be done (we hope) by May Day. Before we can move goats into the barn, we have to get all the little things that will make it their home. If you would like to help with this aspect as well, you can find a list of what we need here. Please contact me before you send anything.

We plan to have a gala goat welcoming ceremony the end of May during the Memorial Day work-exchange weekend. I will keep you posted as plans become clearer.

With joy in my heart for all your loving kindness, I wish you Green Blessings!
